Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis in late 2013, relations between the EU and Ukraine have changed fundamentally. The Ukrainian crisis has developed into a deep conflict between “the West” and Russia. In 2014 the EU and Ukraine signed the Association Agreement, and the EU has promised strong support of Ukraine’s inner reforms with a view to further approximation to the EU.The present volume contains presentations held at an interdisciplinary Conference organized by the Institute of East European Law at the University of Kiel in 2014. It includes presentations by diplomats from the EU, Germany and Ukraine as well asanalyses by political scientists, economists and lawyers. Some papers give a general overview and also show certain differences in the evaluation of developments. Other papers deal with more specific issues, illustrating both the complexity of Ukrainianreforms and the need for a more coherent and effective support strategy of the EU. The purpose of the volume is to give a structured and balanced picture of the present stateof EU-Ukrainian relations with a view to future perspectives. For the publication, the papers have been updated and a post-script has been added.

The essays collected in this volume address a wide spectrum of issues connected to traumatic events and experiences, be they of personal, collective, national or global scale. They are complemented by poetic contemplations on trauma, which Set the tone for the following scholarly investigations. The thematic scope of the collection encompasses psychological, sociological and political approaches to trauma, examples of ethnic and indigenous traumatizations, literary, cultural and visual manifestations of trauma or the medialization of trauma in the museum. As a result of the comparative, and in some cases cross-hermeneutic, design of the volume with German scholars looking at Canadian and Canadian scholars looking at German/European examples of traumatization, transatlantic perspectives on the problems at stake are opened.Contributors:Dennis Cooley (Winnipeg), Martin Endress (Trier), James Fergusson (Winnipeg), Konrad Gross (Kiel), Ralf Hertel (Trier), Kristin Husen (Trier), Stephan Jaeger (Winnipeg), Uli Jung (Trier), Wolfgang Klooss (Trier), Martin Kuester (Marburg), Hartmut Lutz (Greifswald), Wolfgang Lutz (Trier), Adam Muller (Winnipeg), Markus M. Castle research witnessed a revival in recent years, and new theoretical and methodological approaches have massively changed our perception of medieval castles. But despite the fact that this renaissance is observable all over Europe, research is still mostly subject to regional perspectives. In 2016, a workshop was hosted at Kiel University, Germany, in order to address these recent developments and stimulate international scientific discourse. It was especially designed to provide a platform for young scholars. With its 11 contributions, the volume provides a vivid picture of current castle research in different areas of Europe, from Italy to Latvia and the Levant to Denmark.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), course: 'How to be English without being British?' or: 'How to be British without being English?' Identities in Contemporary British Novels: Barnes, Ballard, Levy, language: English, abstract: What is 'Englishness' and how can it be distinguished from 'Britishness'? Why do we need these national identity concepts and why do they pose a problem? The purpose of this essay is to discuss these questions by means of a careful analysis of two selected books: Julian Barnes' England, England and Andrea Levy's Small Island. While both novels deal with the concept of 'Englishness', they do so in different ways. While Barnes exposes the constructedness of collective identities like 'Englishness', Levy reveals its excluding function and the paradoxes between 'Englishness' and 'Britishness' from the perspectives of Jamaican 'Windrush'-migrants.

Aspectuality in English - Temporal Perspectives...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: This paper aims at a closer examination of aspectuality in English. It illustrates the importance of a category which has only scarcely received attention in the study of the English language (cf. Binnick 1991). When it comes to the analysis of situations, the focus is on the verbal category 'tense,' which relates the temporal location of the situation to other points in time. The category of 'aspect' is closely connected to tense, because it provides important information about the internal temporal structure of situations. Nonetheless it is often less familiar to speakers of the English language, referring to, among others, the works of Comrie (1967), Brinton (1988), Binnick (1991) and Kortmann (1991). According to their studies, English lacks formal markers of aspect, whereas the realization of tense in English is quite obvious and thus much discussed. 1.1 Central Questions Based on Binnick's (1991) description of 'aspectuality,' it is necessary to clarify this concept in detail. The central questions for this examination will be: 1. How can aspectuality be inferred from utterances when English lacks aspectual markers? 2. Are there systematic approaches that are concerned with the interaction of 'aspect' and 'Aktionsart' as defined by Comrie (1976) and Vendler (1957)? 3. In which ways do aspectual properties influence or change the semantic meaning of utterances and why? 4. What are the combination options of aspectual perspectives and properties and are there any restrictions consequent on the interaction of different aspectual values? This paper serves not just to answer these questions, but also tries to differentiate between the various subcategories of aspectuality,' which are in general difficult to distinguish properly. Kiel's Christiana Albertina was only the second university in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation to establish a chair for jus naturae et gentium in 1665; in 1914, the first university institute for international law in Europe took up its work in Kiel. Thus, the record of scholarship, academic teaching and, occasionally, practice of international law in Kiel is more than a mere report from a German provincial town: rather, it mirrors the history of the international legal discipline in Germany at large. The present volume traces that history in different perspectives, focussing in turn on institutional aspects, biographical elements, recurring topics, and important events; it also contains a documentary section. A special emphasis is laid on the 20th century with all its historical ruptures and continuities.

Making it tangible. Learning outcomes in scienc...

One of the central features in current educational reforms is a focus on learning outcomes. Many countries have established or revised standards to describe what teachers are supposed to teach and students are expected to learn. More recently, the emphasis has shifted to considerations of how standards can be operationalized in order to make the outcomes of educational efforts more tangible. This book is the result of a symposium held in Kiel, that was arranged by two science education groups, one at the IPN (Leibniz-Institute for Science and Mathematics Education at the University of Kiel) in Germany and the other at the University of York, UK. The seminar brought together renowned experts from 12 countries with different notions of the nature and quality of learning outcomes. The aim was to clarify central conceptions and approaches for a better understanding among the international science education community. The book is divided into five parts. In Part A, the organizers set the scene, describing the rationale for arranging the symposium. Part B provides a broad overview about different approaches, challenges, and pitfalls on the road to the clarification of meaningful and fruitful learning outcomes. The set of papers in Part C provides deep insights into different, although comparable approaches which aim to frame, to assess, and to promote learning and learning outcomes in science education. Smaller projects are presented as well as broad, coordinated national programs. The papers in Part D outline the individual historical development from different national perspectives, reflecting the deficits and problems that led to current reforms. Finally, a summary of the organizers analyses the conclusions from different vantage points.
