Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 2,7, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Institut für Sozialwissenschaften), course: Governing the crisis: how democracies deal with adverse economic conditions, language: English, abstract: Various economic difficulties and economic crises can be challenges for democratic political systems. In some cases it can lead to social cataclysms and even destruction of political systems. In this connection, different political actors offer different programs in order to solve current socio-economic problems. However, according to the modern economic theory the free market economy develops cyclical, and the period of recession always comes after the recovery. There is the conception of political business cycles, which confirm it. Nevertheless political parties often have to carry out the policies and even take part in elections in conditions of economic crises. In some cases they even have to change their programs or significantly correct them in order to keep their voters. In this way, the problem of this term paper is the following one: what are the implications for political parties if they stand for elections in times of crises and their behavior towards voters is either opportunistic or ideological? In order to give the answer for this question which is actual for the current European sovereign debt crisis it is first of all necessary to define political business cycle and to describe their models, which also include the concepts of the parties' behavior as well as their interaction with voters and issues. Then the role of political business cycles in the economic crises will be explained. The understanding of the nature of political business cycles and the activities of political parties in them reveal the implications which the parties face by elections in times of crises. It can b

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: good, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Applied Linguistics), course: Language Variation and Change, language: English, abstract: From the point of view of a continental standard, Canadian English exhibits remarkable phonetic patterns. This term paper demonstrates the development and change of the phoneme /w/ in Canadian English following the research by Chambers. This paper will begin by taking a quick look at the historical development of the phoneme. The phoneme /w/ has several realizations in various dialects of English. Canada is one of the countries where the allophone [hw] has been rather persistent. Nevertheless, /hw/-pronunciation has been disappearing there over the years. I try to indicate how the phoneme is changing recently illustrating this with case studies whenever possible. The age, social classes of subjects as well as the regions of Canada are especially relevant for the given description.

Aspectuality in English - Temporal Perspectives...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: This paper aims at a closer examination of aspectuality in English. It illustrates the importance of a category which has only scarcely received attention in the study of the English language (cf. Binnick 1991). When it comes to the analysis of situations, the focus is on the verbal category 'tense,' which relates the temporal location of the situation to other points in time. The category of 'aspect' is closely connected to tense, because it provides important information about the internal temporal structure of situations. Nonetheless it is often less familiar to speakers of the English language, referring to, among others, the works of Comrie (1967), Brinton (1988), Binnick (1991) and Kortmann (1991). According to their studies, English lacks formal markers of aspect, whereas the realization of tense in English is quite obvious and thus much discussed. 1.1 Central Questions Based on Binnick's (1991) description of 'aspectuality,' it is necessary to clarify this concept in detail. The central questions for this examination will be: 1. How can aspectuality be inferred from utterances when English lacks aspectual markers? 2. Are there systematic approaches that are concerned with the interaction of 'aspect' and 'Aktionsart' as defined by Comrie (1976) and Vendler (1957)? 3. In which ways do aspectual properties influence or change the semantic meaning of utterances and why? 4. What are the combination options of aspectual perspectives and properties and are there any restrictions consequent on the interaction of different aspectual values? This paper serves not just to answer these questions, but also tries to differentiate between the various subcategories of aspectuality,' which are in general difficult to distinguish properly. Lentils, free love, radical politics and family truths . . . Various Pets Alive and Dead is the wonderfully funny fourth novel from Marina Lewycka, author of the bestselling A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. For twenty years Doro and Marcus lived in a commune, convinced lentils and free love would change the world. They didn't. What they did do was give their children a terror of radicalism, dirt, cooking rotas and poverty. Their daughter Clara wants nothing less conformist than her own, clean bathroom. Their son Serge hides the awkward fact that he's a banker earning loadsamoney. So when Doro and Marcus spring a surprise on their kids - just as the world is rocked in ways they always wished for - the family is forced to confront some thorny truths about themselves . . . 'Wonderfully funny . . . a dizzy, eye-watering treat . . . Lewycka is somewhere between Hilary Mantel in her satirical mode and Sue Townsend' Independent 'Thank heavens for Marina Lewycka whose Various Pets Alive and Dead me laugh at least once in every chapter . . . The warmth of its tone, its zest, its blend of quirky, humane comedy and intellectual seriousness make this a novel to treasure' New Statesman 'Marina Lewycka's latest novel is wonderfully funny with moments of pure farce in the best tradition of social satire . . . this inventive and witty book fizzes along from beginning to end' Daily Express Marina Lewycka was born in Kiel, Germany, after the war, grew up in England and lives in Sheffield. Handbook of Marketing

NEW IN PAPERBACK 'The Handbook of Marketing is different... that Barton Weitz and Robin Wensley are its editors should suggest something out of the ordinary. A glance at the contributors (e.g., Wilkie. Webster, Day, Shocker, Keller, Hauser, Winer, Stewart. Parasuraman. Zeithaml) puts the matter to rest. The Handbook is an extraordinary effort. The blurb on the dust jacket is an understatement-the 'Handbook will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, academics, and thoughtful practitioners in marketing'-the book is far more than that..... in short, the Handbook is probably invaluable to all academic researchers' - Journal of Marketing 'Handbook of Marketing is a rich compilation of thorough reviews in the field of marketing management. The editors have selected premier marketing scholars and have given them the opportunity to examine their area of expertise in a format much less confining than those provided by the major journals in the field. The authors have taken this opportunity and have done an outstanding job not only of reviewing and structuring the extensive body of thought in many major areas of marketing management but also of providing valuable suggestions for further research. They have brought together major contributions from the field of marketing and from other related disciplines. I strongly encourage marketing scholars to consider Handbook of Marketing. The text will certainly appeal to those with interests in marketing management; it may also be useful to those who are more focused on methodological issues but interested in topics that need additional, rigorous investigation.... In summary, Weitz and Wensley should be congratulated for the excellent work in developing Handbook of Marketing. The book fills a major void in the marketing literature on marketing management and will serve the discipline for many years to come' - Journal of Marketing Research 'This text achieves the rare goal of covering marketing clearly and deeply, with no unnecessary examples or pretty pictures. For the enquiring mind, it is a wonderful link between a basic knowledge of marketing concepts and a grasp of where research in marketing is taking us' - Ken Simmonds, Emeritus Professor of Marketing and International Business, London Business School The Handbook of Marketing presents a major retrospective and prospective overview of the field of marketing, and provides a landmark reference at a time when many of the traditional boundaries and domains within the marketing discipline have been subject to change. - A high calibre collection compiled by an international and extremely distinguished advisory board of marketing academics - With contributions from leading scholars in the field, each covering the latest research issues in particular areas of expertise - Each chapter provides the necessary background for study and research of specific empirical and theoretical topics in marketing. The Handbook of Marketing will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and academics in marketing.
