Climate Time Series Analysis

Climate is a paradigm of a complex system. Analysing climate data is an exciting challenge, which is increased by non-normal distributional shape, serial dependence, uneven spacing and timescale uncertainties. This book presents bootstrap resampling as a computing-intensive method able to meet the challenge. It shows the bootstrap to perform reliably in the most important statistical estimation techniques: regression, spectral analysis, extreme values and correlation. This book is written for climatologists and applied statisticians. It explains step by step the bootstrap algorithms (including novel adaptions) and methods for confidence interval construction. It tests the accuracy of the algorithms by means of Monte Carlo experiments. It analyses a large array of climate time series, giving a detailed account on the data and the associated climatological questions. This makes the book self-contained for graduate students and researchers. Climate is a paradigm of a complex system. He was then postdoc in Statisticsat the University of Kent at Canterbury, research scientist in Meteorology at the University of Leipzig and visiting scholar in Earth Sciences at Boston University, currently he does climate research at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven. His science focuses on climate extremes, time series analysis and mathematical simulation methods. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles. In his 2003 Nature paper, Mudelsee introduced the bootstrap method to flood risk analysis. In 2005, he founded the company Climate Risk Analysis.

Plasma Physics

This book is an outgrowth of courses in plasma physics which I have taught at Kiel University for many years. During this time I have tried to convince my students that plasmas as different as gas dicharges, fusion plasmas and space plasmas can be described in a uni ed way by simple models. The challenge in teaching plasma physics is its apparent complexity. The wealth of plasma phenomena found in so diverse elds makes it quite different from atomic physics, where atomic structure, spectral lines and chemical binding can all be derived from a single equation-the Schrödinger equation. I positively accept the variety of plasmas and refrain from subdividing plasma physics into the traditional, but arti cially separated elds, of hot, cold and space plasmas. This is why I like to confront my students, and the readers of this book, with examples from so many elds. By this approach, I believe, they will be able to become discoverers who can see the commonality between a falling apple and planetary motion. As an experimentalist, I am convinced that plasma physics can be best understood from a bottom-up approach with many illustrating examples that give the students con dence in their understanding of plasma processes. The theoretical framework of plasma physics can then be introduced in several steps of re nement. In the end, the student (or reader) will see that there is something like the Schrödinger equation, namely the Vlasov-Maxwell model of plasmas, from which nearly all phenomena in collisionless plasmas can be derived.

The Love Story in Jane Eyre - A Genuine Romance?

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,7, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The relationship between Jane Eyre and Edward Fairfax Rochester plays a major part in the novel of Jane Eyre, as Rochester turns out to be the love of Jane's life. At first she finds him rather impolite and cold-hearted, but soon they become kindred souls. When Rochester tries to secure her in a bigamous marriage, he forces Jane to leave him. While Rochester falls victim to his wife, Jane becomes an independent heiress. When in the end they are reunited, the power structure of their relationship has been inverted. Rochester has to learn to depend on Jane, who in the meantime had to realize that she can only truly be happy living with her master. The story of Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester has often been read as a model for the genre of romance. There are two lovers who must overcome certain obstacles to be reunited in the end and live happily ever after. Such a genuine romance is the product of two lovers who both choose their partner by their own free will. They choose to be with one another because of their feelings for each other and not for other reasons like money, social status or just mere passion. But Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester couldn't be more different regarding their financial situations and social backgrounds. What is more, there is a big difference in their age and also in their intentions. For these reasons I wish to challenge the assumption that this is a genuine romance.
