This volume contains the articles presented at the 6th International Symposium on Foundationsof Informationand KnowledgeSystems (FoIKS 2010)which was held in So?a, Bulgaria during February 15 19, 2010. The FoIKS symposia provide a biennial forum for presenting and discussing theoreticalandappliedresearchoninformationandknowledgesystems.Thegoal is to bring together researchers with an interest in this subject, share research experiences, promote collaboration and identify new issues and directions for future research. FoIKS 2010 solicited original contributions dealing with any foundational aspects of information and knowledge systems. This included submissions that apply ideas, theories or methods from speci?c disciplines to information and knowledge systems. Examples of such disciplines are discrete mathematics, logic and algebra, model theory, information theory, complexity theory, algorithmics and computation, statistics, and optimization. Previous FoIKS symposia were held in Pisa (Italy) in 2008, Budapest (Hungary) in 2006, Vienna (Austria) in 2004, Schloss Salzau near Kiel (Germany) in 2002,and Burg/Spreewaldnear Berlin (Germany) in 2000.FoIKS took up the tradition of the conference series Mathematical Fundamentals of Database Systems (MFDBS), which initiated East West collaboration in the ?eld of database theory. Former MFDBS conferences were held in Rostock (Germany) in 1991, Visegrad (Hungary) in 1989, and Dresden (Germany) in 1987. The FoIKS symposia are a forum for intense discussions. Speakers are given su?cient time to present their ideas and results within the larger context of their research. Furthermore, participants are asked in advance to prepare a ?rst response to a contribution of another author.

He was then postdoc in Statisticsat the University of Kent at Canterbury, research scientist in Meteorology at the University of Leipzig and visiting scholar in Earth Sciences at Boston University, currently he does climate research at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven. His science focuses on climate extremes, time series analysis and mathematical simulation methods. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles. In his 2003 Nature paper, Mudelsee introduced the bootstrap method to flood risk analysis. In 2005, he founded the company Climate Risk Analysis.

The correct development of large / com plex pieces of software demands a thorough structuring of the design process. In a first phase the requirements engineering is relevant for capturing the relevant functionality and its adequate formalization in precise mathematical definitions. Prototyping can can be used as a means for checking the functional behaviour at this early stage of development. The ade quate specification resulting from the first phase is then the basis for the second phase which comprises the derivation of an implementation. This phase requires the use of formal methods and tools to verify/validate the implementation. A prerequisite for applying this approach is to have a suitable mechanical support. This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop Tool Support for System Specification, Development and Verification organized June 1 - 4, 1998, in Malente, Germany. This workshop is the third in a series of events devoted to this topic. The first two workshops were held in 1994 in Kiel and 1996 in Bremen, Germany. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers interested in the use and development of tools which support the use of mathematical techniques for the specification, development and verification of systems. The workshop covers the spectrum from verification tools to graphical editors and compilers. The program of the workshop included an invited lecture and 26 talks. The invited lecture was given by F.W. von Henke (University ofUlm) on Mechanized formal methods and system design.
